Study of the environment - living and learning

   Locations: Paraty, Ubatuba and Angra dos Reis

Suggested activities:

 

  • Visit  indigenous communities, quilombola and traditional coastal communities.

  • Visit  the historical centre of Paraty including the famous Gold Trail. 

  • Outdoor adventure activities in the mountains and sea.

  • Visit  the Ubatuba Aquarium , Tamar Turtle and Marine Life Sanctuary, along with biodiverse coastal rock pools and the Atomic Energy Power Plant in Angra dos Reis. 

These study trips are aimed at groups from nine years of age and upwards. They cover various disciplines including history, geography, science, portuguese, and art.

The itinerary for a particular trip is developed in line with the objectives of the school and the teachers in charge.

It is also possible to set up encounters between young people in the local area, such as those from the local coastal community or the  indigenous young people with  visiting groups. This creates a great opportunity for the development of understanding and the exchange of knowledge between the groups. 

Our methodology seeks to develop students´research practices. They are encouraged to take an investigative approach, taking into account the complexity of it’s historical and geographical context along with other environmental characteristics . 

While taking part in the cultural tours, students can also enjoy some more adventurous activities in the Atlantic rainforest. These include walking trails, zip lining, river tubing, canopy tours and abseiling in various locations throughout the forests and waterfalls located in the vicinity of the Serra do Mar National Park. 

These study trips are intended for Basic primary and secondary education as well as higher education and can be adapted to meet the needs of specific groups and their goals.

I began my educational career as a history teacher in elementary school and over the years I have developed my professional skills by further studies in Social Sciences. This combination has led me to develop and  coordinate curricular projects

 

 I offer professional and informed pedagogical support  in the implementation of cultural and environmental projects that help to stimulate relations and development between communities from different areas. The information and cultural exchange emphasizes the importance of the preservation of culture and the environment, fundamental in the building of knowledge. 

Options of historical and cultural tours in Ubatuba and Paraty

 

Anchieta Island

Duration: 4 – 6 hrs depending on the group size and conditions of the day

Anchieta Island was an old prison in the first half of the twentieth century. Your expert guide will tell you about the history and flora and fauna of this beautiful island. The tour includes: a boat trip from the mainland, guided walking tour and a light snack.

 

Quilombo da Casa de Farinha

Duration: Full Day

Visit a Quilombo, a former farm from where the slaves worked. Nowadays several families live on the property and preserve their traditions such as making cassava flour using the original water mill and making traditional crafts.

There are two trails, one which crosses the forest preservation area and the other which leads to the river where you can take a refreshing dip in the crystalline waters. After the walk you can enjoy a traditional home made lunch in the atmospheric” casa de farinha”

Indigenous Guarani Community Visit

Duration: 4 hours 

Visit an indigenous community village where you will learn about their daily life and customs. See the prayer house and traditional dancing and singing You can participate in body painting if you wish and afterwards share a snack and mingle with the village children

The tour includes: Guided village visit, entrance to the village and light snacks

 

Caiçara Mamanguá Bay Community Visit

Duration: Full day

Visit a local fishing village to see how the methods of fishing have changed over time due to the need for environmental protection Paddle a kayak through or take a walk to observe the mangroves. Enjoy a traditional lunch then you will have an opportunity to paint your own model canoe to take home as a souvenir

The tour includes: Boat trip from Paraty Mirim, guided treck through the forest, traditional lunch and caiçara handicrafts workshop.

 

Rain Forest Treck

Duration: 3 hours/4 hours

Treck through the lush Altantic Forest with a biologist who will explain the wonders of the local flora and fauna

Tour includes: Guided treck and rubber boots (which you can take home)

 

Walking Tour of Paraty

Duration: 4 hours

Discover the Defensor Perpétuo Fort and the Historic Centre of Paraty with an expert guide

The tour includes: Guided walking tour

 

Gold Path

Duration: 4 hours 

Walk the trail where gold was transported from Minas Gerais to Rio de Janeiro via Paraty. The road constructed by slaves was an engineering feat of the eighteenth century. Afterwards if you like you can have a refreshing dip in the waterfall
